Power Supply – With Cable

Computers and servers have a power supply, also known as a PSU (Power Supply Unit). A device’s power supply ensures that all other components are provided with the correct amount of power. Inside the power supply, the incoming voltage is transformed into one or more lower voltages. In addition, the power supply sometimes converts alternating current to direct current, or vice versa.

Metals in an old power supply

Various types of metal are used in a power supply. The housing is made of iron, and many of the components contain copper. In addition, the circuit boards in power supplies (particularly the high-end models) also contain relatively small amounts of precious metals, such as gold and silver.

The cable of a power supply contains a high percentage of copper, which is largely responsible for the power supply's value. This is why a power supply that includes a cable is worth more than one without a cable.
