Partly due to the government’s subsidy program to make homes more sustainable, a lot of old boilers have been replaced with heat pumps or other forms of heating. The replacement market is expected to continue growing, as many Dutch people are choosing to make their homes more sustainable and thus prepare for the future.
Dismantling and Recycling a Boiler
Are you the specialist who replaces old boilers and are you looking for a certified recycler? Look no further! Krommenhoek Metals holds the WEEELABEX certificate , which means we comply with the CENELEC standard for the collection of central heating boilers, among other items. Again, you’re not supposed to dismantle the boiler yourself—you should have it done by a certified processor. If you’re a self-employed installer and occasionally have an old boiler you want to drop off, you can do so quickly and easily at one of our covered drop-off locations in Rotterdam and/or Wateringen. Do you run a larger installation company and frequently have boilers in large quantities? In that case, we’ll place sealed containers at your project site or at your business location. Our container service is available throughout the Netherlands.
The Netherlands Goes Gas-Free: Where Can You Turn In Your Old Boiler?
The government wants the Netherlands to be completely carbon-neutral by 2050 in order to combat climate change. This is enshrined in the Paris Climate Agreement, which was signed by 195 countries, including the Netherlands. This led to the European Green Deal—a plan by the European Union to make Europe climate-neutral by 2050. This plan has been implemented as what we now know as the Climate Act—a binding legal obligation. One of the measures the Netherlands has taken to become carbon-neutral by 2050 is to phase out natural gas.
You can imagine that there will be a surplus of boilers. You can turn in your old boiler at Krommenhoek Metals. We ensure that all usable materials are recycled, thereby offering a sustainable solution for recycling your old boiler.
From a Central Heating Boiler to a Hybrid Heat Pump
To meet climate goals, the government has implemented a number of measures. For example, since 2018, all newly built homes have been delivered without a gas-fired boiler to provide heating and hot showers. As an alternative, a heat pump can be used to heat your home. Starting in 2026, it will be prohibited to replace your gas-fired boiler with a new boiler; instead, you must choose a sustainable alternative, such as a fully electric heat pump or a hybrid heat pump. The hybrid heat pump works in conjunction with your boiler; while you’ll still use some gas during peak times—such as when taking a shower—the rest of the day your home will be heated by your hybrid heat pump, which runs on electricity.

Leave it to the specialist
Are you really that handy, and is replacing a boiler a piece of cake for you? Don’t even try it. Because in the Netherlands, both the repair and replacement of a gas-fired boiler must be performed by a certified installer. This is required by law and is intended to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning. So even if you’re handy, call in a specialist who can replace your boiler. Not sure if you’re dealing with a certified installer? Check the registry. All certified installers are listed there. Starting April 1, 2023, it will be mandatory to be certified to work on gas-fired appliances, such as your boiler.
