Returning Your Rechargeable and Non-Rechargeable Batteries

We then ensure that your old battery is recycled properly and efficiently. The components can later be reused in new products or processed into something else. For example, the lead is melted down into new lead ingots. The plastic casing of the lead-acid batteries serves as a substitute for coke, which was previously used as a type of catalyst in the smelting process. Finally, the battery acid is collected and reused in the production of new lead-acid batteries. The terminals on the battery are usually made of brass and are removed from the lead melt and sold to a copper smelter. This is possible because copper has a higher melting point than lead. In this way, a lead-acid battery is completely recycled and 100% reused.

Partly for safety reasons, the following is important to keep in mind when you want to drop offold batteries—whether loose or inside electrical/electronic devices—at Krommenhoek Metals. We will first determine which waste stream they fall under.

Waste Streams

We have created a four-stream waste classification system specifically for this purpose:

1. Discarded electrical and electronic devices with damaged lithium (ion) batteries.
2. Discarded electrical and electronic equipment containing various types of batteries or rechargeable batteries, whether damaged or undamaged.
3. Separatelead-acid batteries, whether damaged or not.
4. Separate batteries of different types, whether damaged or not.

Any items that fall under waste streams 2 and 3 will be accepted only if two conditions are met. You must drop them off:

• separated from other waste streams
• free of PCBs, refrigerants, and free asbestos fibers

Unfortunately, wecannot accept everything that falls under waste streams 1 and 4.

How do I know if my lithium (ion) battery is damaged?

You can see this for yourself. A loose casing, deformation, fire or smoke damage, or a swollen appearance are signs of damage.

If there is any doubt about the type of battery, it is assumed to be a lithium (ion) battery.

Financial penalty

If, after delivery by professional suppliers, we subsequently discover products that fall into the category of unacceptable waste streams, we will charge a fee for this, the amount of which is to be determined.
