H1 Monel Scrap
Monel is named after the former president of the International Nickel Company (INCO), Ambrose Monell (https://patentimages.storage.googleapis.com/9e/0e/7e/e13619d738acc5/US811239.pdf). The term INCO is perhaps better known for the many nickel alloys that owe their names to this company: INCO 600, Inconel 625 scrap, and Inconel 718 scrap. Read more about Inconel here.
Anyway, Monel is an alloy of nickel and copper. It belongs to the nickel group, with up to 67% nickel in the alloy. It is a very expensive alloy. Monel is used in the aviation industry, oil production, and, for example, offshore applications. A Monel 400 alloy consists of 28% to 35% copper and at least 63% nickel. Sometimes aluminum or titanium is added to further strengthen the material.
The price of Monel is heavily influenced by fluctuations in nickel and copper prices on the LME.
Fun fact: The ISRI code for Monel scrap is “Ideal,” for turned parts “Lemur,” and for castings “Lemon.”
