What is the value of hammered aluminum?
Are you looking for information about the value of hammered aluminum? If so, you’re probably running into the same problem as many others: the term “value” can mean different things. The scrap value for recycling is very different from the price of a decorative product. In this blog, we’ll explain both so you know exactly where you stand.
Hammered aluminum
Hammered aluminum is aluminum with a hammered finish. The surface has small dents or ridges that give the metal a handcrafted, embossed appearance. This finish is created through mechanical processing: the material is literally hammered or pressed.
You’ll find hammered aluminum in three main forms. First, as sheet material in construction and industry, for example for exterior cladding or finishes. Second, as decorative products such as bowls, trays, and vases. And third, as vintage items from the 1940s through the 1960s, often bearing brand names like Everlast or Continental. The hammered finish also has a practical advantage: scratches and minor damage are much less noticeable than on smooth aluminum.
Applications of Hammered Aluminum
Hammered aluminum is used in various industries. You can find it in:
- Decorative items: bowls, trays, vases, candlesticks, and serving accessories
- Building materials: facade panels, gutters, decorative moldings, and interior finishes
- Industrial sheets: semi-finished products for manufacturing or DIY projects
- Vintage furniture and accessories: mid-century tables, lamps, and wall decorations
- Foodservice and retail: serving platters, displays, and interior elements
The application largely determines the value of the material.
Valuation of Hammered Aluminum
This is where it gets interesting. The value of hammered aluminum depends entirely on the context. There are two completely different types of value:
Scrap value (for recycling)
If you want to sell hammered aluminum as scrap, only the material itself counts. The hammered finish adds no value whatsoever. At Krommenhoek Metals, hammered aluminum is simply classified as “clean aluminum.” The current daily price is around €1.00 to €1.25 per kilo, depending on the purity and the world market price.
A 500-gram hammered aluminum tray is therefore worth about €0.50 to €0.60 as scrap. The material is melted down and reused, at which point the finish is removed. For recycling purposes, it therefore makes no difference whether the aluminum is hammered, smooth, or polished.
Product and Design Value
With decorative or functional products, the value is entirely different. Here, design, appearance, and brand determine the price. A new hammered aluminum bowl can easily cost between €30 and €80 in an online store. High-quality designer pieces from brands like Mauviel sell for between €100 and €300.
Vintage hammered aluminum also has its own market. Authentic pieces from the ’40s through the ’60s sell for €15 to €50 per item, depending on their condition and rarity. Larger items, such as tables or lamps, can fetch €100 to €250. Here, you’re paying for the look and the story behind the item.
The conclusion is simple: do you have a nice, intact decorative piece? Then sell it as a product on Marktplaats or at a vintage store. Is it damaged, purely functional scrap material, or does it no longer have any decorative value? In that case, recycling it through a metal dealer is the best option.
Why turn in hammered aluminum?
Recycling is the right choice in a number of situations. Consider, for example, scrap material from construction or industry, where the hammered finish served a functional purpose but the product has now been discarded. Or decorative items that are so damaged that they have lost their value as products. Larger quantities of sheet material that are no longer in use are also best turned in as scrap.
What’s the advantage of recycling with Krommenhoek Metals? You receive a fair daily price based on the current weight and quality of the aluminum. The material is processed in a sustainable manner and reused in new applications. And you can easily drop it off at our locations or arrange for pickup for larger quantities.
