Returning an old battery: where, how, and what are the benefits?
Your old lead-acid or lithium battery does not belong in the trash can or with bulky waste. At Krommenhoek Metals, you can drop off old batteries at our locations in Rotterdam and Wateringen. You can even get paid for lead-acid batteries. Do you have a large number of them? If so, we’ll pick them up from you for free.
Where can you return lithium batteries and lead-acid batteries?
Small household batteries (AA, AAA) can be placed in the collection bin at the supermarket. However, for lead-acid batteries, lithium batteries, and industrial batteries, you’ll need to take them to a specialized collection point.
At Krommenhoek Metals, we accept the following types of batteries, among others:
- Lead-acid batteries (car, truck, forklift)
- Lithium batteries in undamaged condition
- Batteries from e-bikes and electric scooters
- Industrial Batteries and Emergency Power Supplies
Stop by our location in Rotterdam (Keenstraat 28) or in Westland (Maasdijkseweg 138). Not sure what type of battery you have? Send a photo via WhatsApp to +31 6 13 662 187, and we’ll let you know what it’s worth.
Do you get paid for turning in old lead-acid batteries?
Yes, lead-acid batteries are worth money. The price per kilogram depends on the current battery price. You can always find the most recent purchase prices on our scrap prices page. With a Staalpas, you’ll get a higher price per kilogram.
The great thing is: lead-acid batteries are 100% recycled. The lead is melted down into new ingots. The plastic casing serves as a substitute for coke in the smelting process. The battery acid is collected and reused in the production of new batteries. Even the brass terminals are removed from the melt and sent to a copper smelter. Nothing goes to waste.
How can you safely dispose of old lithium batteries and lead-acid batteries?
Not every battery can be accepted without further inspection. Damaged lithium batteries pose a fire hazard and cannot be accepted. Do you notice any signs of swelling, deformation, or fire and smoke damage? If so, please contact us first. We always accept lead-acid batteries, provided they are separated from other waste streams and free of PCBs, refrigerants, and asbestos fibers.
Tips for safe transportation:
- Cover the terminals with tape to prevent a short circuit
- Transport batteries in an upright position and do not allow them to slide
- Keep them in a cool, dry place until you turn them in
- Never mix different types in the same box
