How Can You Tell If You Have a Zinc Deficiency? Five Simple Tests You Can Do at Home

You’re holding a piece of gray metal and aren’t sure: is this zinc, or something else, like aluminum or galvanized steel? The quickest way to identify zinc is with a magnet test and by simply feeling it, because zinc isn’t magnetic, whereas iron or steel is. So if it isn’t magnetic, you can rule out iron. Zinc is also bluish-gray in color, which often makes it easy to distinguish from aluminum, which is usually lighter in color. But the real test is to feel the piece of zinc for a moment. If it feels heavy, it’s zinc. If the metal is surprisingly light, it’s aluminum.

How can you identify zinc metal?

These five checks will help you find out quickly.

Magnet Test

Hold a magnet up to the metal. If the material isn't magnetic, the magnet won't stick to it. Steel and galvanized steel, on the other hand, will react. Does it stick? Then you're not dealing with zinc, but a piece of steel.

Evaluate Color

The metal has a characteristic blue-gray hue, slightly bluer than aluminum (which is more silver-gray). Older material develops a matte, grayish-white patina. You’ll never see brown rust spots on it—those are typical of iron or steel. The only exception is if there’s an iron screw embedded in the material; in that case, a small spot of rust may appear there.

Feeling Weight

With a density of 7.13 g/cm³, the material is nearly three times as heavy as aluminum (2.7 g/cm³), but much lighter than lead (11.3 g/cm³). You can feel that difference immediately when you pick up two pieces of the same size.

Bending Test

The metal is malleable but resilient. Tin dents more easily and makes a creaking sound when bent (tin creaking). Lead, on the other hand, bends very smoothly without any springback.

Gutters, downspouts, roofing, and siding are often made of zinc. Small screws and thin sheets are rarely made of zinc.

Is zinc magnetic or not?

No. A magnet does not stick to solid zinc. That’s what makes the magnet test so useful for identifying zinc: it immediately rules out iron and steel. Galvanized steel, however, is magnetic because its core is made of steel.

The most common mistake is confusing zinc with galvanized steel. Galvanized steel has only a thin protective coating. Sometimes you’ll see zinc bloom on the surface, and brown rust may be visible in damaged areas. This doesn’t happen with solid material.
