What is the highest price ever paid for scrap metal?

The history of scrap metal prices shows spectacular spikes. In October 2021, the global steel price reached an all-time high of $2,143 per metric ton. For the Netherlands, this meant that traders were paying up to €0.35 per kilogram during that period.

These extreme prices don’t just come out of nowhere. They are the result of global demand, economic crises, and geopolitical tensions. In this article, we’ll explain exactly how these spikes occur and how the scrap metal price is determined.

History of Scrap Metal Prices

The scrap metal market has seen three major record-breaking moments. The first peak occurred in July 2008, when the global economy was booming. Due to enormous demand from China, the price skyrocketed to €1,204 per metric ton. This “supercycle” came to an abrupt end during the financial crisis.

The post-COVID recovery led to an even more extreme spike. Supply chain disruptions and a resurgence in the construction sector pushed prices to unprecedented heights in October 2021. However, this did not remain the all-time record for Europe.

In April 2022, the market skyrocketed once again. The war in Ukraine caused a shortage, as Russia and Ukraine are major steel exporters. This geopolitical shock resulted in the highest-ever scrap metal prices for Dutch individuals and businesses.

How is the price of scrap metal determined?

The price you receive at the gate is derived from global indices. The London Metal Exchange (LME) serves as the basis. Specifically, the LME Steel Scrap CFR Turkey index is the benchmark, because Turkey is the world’s largest scrap importer.

A metal dealer takes the market price and deducts costs from it—such as logistics, processing, energy costs, etc. The formula is simple: market price minus operating costs equals your net purchase price. That’s why the price varies by dealer and changes daily.

Why does the price of scrap metal keep changing?

There are three main reasons for fluctuations in the price of scrap metal. First, the market reacts directly to supply and demand. When the automotive or construction industries pick up, demand for steel—and thus for scrap metal—rises.

Second, currency fluctuations play a role. International trade is conducted in U.S. dollars. A strong dollar automatically increases the value of scrap metal in euros, which means that the exchange rate directly affects your payout.

Third, speculation creates constant volatility. Traders use futures contracts to hedge risks, which can cause the price to fluctuate hourly.

What factors influence the price of scrap metal?

In addition to global trends, the quality of your scrap metal determines the final result. Heavy scrap, such as beams (thicker than 6 mm), fetches about €0.20 per kilogram. Light scrap from appliances or bicycles fetches only €0.13 per kilogram. This difference in value can be quite significant.

Energy prices have a significant impact on the market. High gas and electricity costs increase processing costs for factories. Geopolitical tensions can disrupt supply lines, as we saw during the Ukraine crisis.

New regulations (EVOA) are tightening export rules. Starting in 2027, stricter audits will apply to waste exports outside the EU, which could shift the balance of the European market.
