Krommenhoek Metals Expands with New ISO Certifications
Krommenhoek Metals has recently significantly expanded its portfolio of certifications. In addition to the existing certifications for its Linschotenstraat location, the company has now also obtained ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 certifications for its other locations, including the Keenstraat site and the Wateringen facility (Krommenhoek Metals Westland).
Comprehensive Certification for a Growing Company
ISO 9001 certification confirms that Krommenhoek Metals complies with the international standard for quality management, while ISO 14001 focuses on environmental management within the organization. In addition, the company has obtained VCA** certification (Safety, Health, and Environment Checklist for Contractors) for performing work on-site.
“We had to make significant adjustments to the certification process because of the different entities,” Hiddo explains. “Although there are, of course, commonalities among the various locations, matters such as inspections, human resources, and permits must be assessed on a location-by-location basis.”
Intensive certification process
Obtaining the certifications was an intensive process that took several months. External auditors spent four days thoroughly reviewing all aspects of the company’s operations. During this audit, not only were processes reviewed, but extensive interviews were also conducted with employees from various departments.
Krommenhoek Metals is constantly working to improve its processes. This is measured, among other things, through quarterly reports that track various process indicators, such as complaint records, whether employees possess the right competencies and skills, as well as absenteeism due to illness and any environmental incidents.
Why Certification?
These certifications not only confirm the quality standards that Krommenhoek Metals adheres to, but are also increasingly sought after by customers, especially in an international context. “For example, if a German company wants to do business with a Dutch company, it’s very helpful that we can demonstrate that we meet international standards,” says Hiddo.
Focus on Safety and Sustainability
With its ISO 14001 certification, Krommenhoek Metals underscores its commitment to the environment and sustainability, which aligns well with its core recycling activities. The VCA** certification also ensures safety during projects at external locations. This is particularly important for specific tasks such as cutting large materials on-site at customer locations.
In addition to the certifications obtained during this certification cycle, Krommenhoek Metals has also achieved Level 3 on the CO₂ Performance Ladder. This is the Netherlands’ leading sustainability tool, which helps reduce CO₂ emissions and costs both in day-to-day operations and on projects.
The certificates are valid for three years, with annual audits to ensure that all standards are met. Krommenhoek Metals is also looking to the future, considering potential new certifications specifically focused on various parts of the company, such as IT recycling at its subsidiary Whale.
Standing Out in the Market
With this comprehensive certification, Krommenhoek Metals is positioning itself as a forward-thinking company in the recycling industry. “We want to set ourselves apart through our service and professionalism,” Hiddo emphasizes. This is reflected not only in the certifications but also in the way the company welcomes its private customers—for example, with a covered reception area and a nice cup of coffee.
The new certifications are valid starting in October 2024 and underscore Krommenhoek Metals’ commitment to quality, safety, the environment, and sustainability in all of its business operations.
