Catalytic Converter Recycling: A Handshake

Kiwa Awards Krommenhoek Metals a Level 3 CO2-Aware Certificate

Our extensive efforts in the area of CO2 policy culminated on February 16, 2022. On that day, the well-known Kiwa Institute awarded Krommenhoek Metals the Level 3 CO2-Conscious certificate for the next five years.

Kiwa has issued the following statement:
It has been determined that Krommenhoek Metals’ management system for CO2-conscious operations complies with Level 3 of the CO2 Performance Ladder handbook. This applies to the scope of Wholesale of iron and steel scrap and used non-ferrous metals.

This also means we have become a partner of the Foundation for Climate-Friendly Procurement and Business (SKAO). You can find more information about the CO2 Performance Ladder and how to use it ontheir website.

Krommenhoek Metals holds a prominent position in the recycling sector. That is why we saw opportunities to assess the relative reduction in supply chain emissions—for example, by comparing the processing of secondary metals with the production of primary metals.

Approach

We started with our most direct impact: Scope 1 and 2 CO2 emissions (equivalents). The first step was to map out and analyze our consumption and the associated emissions. Based on that, we set reduction targets in line with the climate agreement:

  • 49% reduction in CO2 emissions by 2030
  • 75% (relative) fuel savings within two years

In accordance with Level 3 of the CO2 Performance Ladder, an energy management program has been developed to achieve these objectives. More information on this can be found in the CO2 Reduction Communication Plan.
