Iron turnings (or turnings)

Metal turnings are a byproduct of the machining industry. They are typically generated by machine shops and fabrication facilities. For these companies, it is important that their metal turnings be processed by a certified and professional company. This is due to the strict requirements set forth by environmental legislation in the Netherlands and even at the European level.

Krommenhoek Metals in Rotterdam is one such recognized processor of iron turnings, as our Flemish neighbors to the south call them. We maintain close ties with manufacturers both within and outside the country’s borders—not only at the European level but also beyond. That’s why, as a customer, you’re always assured of a competitive price and can count on us to process your orders correctly.

We collect all scrap iron from our business partners at a central location in Rotterdam. From there, it is delivered directly to the factories, where it is used as a raw material for the production of new steel. The proper processing and recycling of your scrap iron contributes to significant savings. For every metric ton (1,000 kg) of steel produced, these savings amount to:

  • 1,100 kg of iron ore
  • 600 kg of coal
  • 55 kg of lime stone
  • 642 kWh of electricity
  • 287 liters of oil

Krommenhoek Metals, of course, offers you a professional scrap container service. We can deliver our fully liquid-tight outdoor containers (ranging from 20 to 40 m³) to your location. And for use in your workshop, we offer liquid-tight bins made of plastic or steel.

Metal shavings, also known as turning shavings or swarf, are produced during the machining of steel. During this process, material is removed from a metal workpiece using lathes, milling machines, or drills. The small curls and metal shavings released during this process are called metal shavings.

This type of scrap is mainly generated at machine shops, fabrication shops, and metalworking companies. Because these companies regularly produce large quantities of turnings, the material is often collected separately for recycling.

The value of iron scrap is largely determined by the current steel market and the demand for recycled steel.
